The Stanford Graduate School of Education and the next door Barnum Center are located in the middle of Stanford University’s campus in Palo Alto, California. The Graduate School is a 3 story structure (plus basement) used for classrooms, offices, a library, and a lecture hall. The selective structural demo performed by Silverado allows for the renovation and structural rehabilitation of the building. The full demolition of the two-story addition to the Barnum Center, allows for a new 4 story addition to the historical single-story masonry building, providing new office and classroom space. Silverado also completed significant site work / landscape demolition in the surrounding area, making space for other trades. Due to the historic nature of the building the job was originally planned to be completed with only hand demo – with laborers using chipping guns. The Silverado team was able to utilize our skilled operators and mini excavators to preform a significant amount of the chipping, increasing our efficiency and reducing the demand on the laborers chipping. A major milestone of the project was bringing in a crane to remove girders and trusses which were approximately 28' in length and 19,000 lbs. in weight and 29' in length and 5,000 lbs. in weight respectively from the lower roof section. An added challenge present through the entirety of the project has been the presence of students on campus, which has required a heightened effort from flaggers to escort every delivery in and out of site, and constant vigilance to ensure pedestrian safety.
