The utilidor is an approximately 30’ wide by 12’ deep basement structure that runs the entire length of the recently completed Harvey Milk Terminal 1 building at SFO. This basement structure is a common path for fire, water, electrical utilities as well as the luggage handing equipment from the departures main terminal building to and from the aircraft gates at Boarding Area B. The utilidor also has ten branch “fingers” for the luggage equipment that run into the departures luggage drop off and arrivals carousel areas. The first phase, completed back in 2018, included the tunnel from grid line 10 all the way to 42 on the western end of the terminal. SFO Terminal 1-Utilidor Gridlines 1-9 was the completion of the new terminal up to Boarding Area C. The shoring contractor started by installing the sheet pile wall mirroring the footprint of the utilidor and remaining six fingers. Silverado started by excavating the first five feet of soil to make way for the installation of wales and tube bracing at the top of the shoring wall. Silverado circled back to follow the bracing install and excavated the final 10’ for the utilidor and several deep footings at the utilidor base. Our scope was completed with the installation of soil stabilizing fabric and 12” of drain rock to support the eventual installation of the 14” utilidor slab. Silverado circled back after the structural steel was erected to finish the finger excavation and base rock installation.
