Pier 70 located in San Francisco has been used for ship building since the Gold Rush and was a vital national resource during World War 2.

Silverado Contractors was contracted to disassemble and store 49.75 foot- tall steel building 15. In order to do so they needed to separate the Building 12 and 15 which had been connected for years, enabling the legacy to be preserved.

To begin, Building 15 was raised off the foundation its rested on since world war 2. The dollies alone held the 300,000 pound structure. In order to ensure the pull capacity, it was decided two 350s would do the work. Two operators had to be in sync as they pulled the structure 180 feet from the original location. This allowed the developer to raise Building 12 ten feet and seismically update it, while Silverado stored Building 15 off to the side. Once Building 12 was raised it was time for the team to jack up Building 15, 12.5 ft and slide it over on steel rails. First, they aligned building 15 with the foundations next to building 12. The jacks they used climb within themselves using a piston that drops down and will prop itself up in the middle. Using side supports, it raises the piston, and this process is then repeated. As the building was climbing, the process was stopped, allowing crane mats to be installed prior to setting the building down. The jacks were then reset. This was a new process and required extreme precision to keep the 115 ton steel structure stable. Each joint on each rail needed to be supported by temper crane mats with steel rails on top. Once the building was raised it was then lowered onto the steel rails and was no longer supported by the jacks. Each jack stoke was just under 20 inches. The 4 manual jacks needed to work in sync, or the building could distort. Building 15 was moved inch by inch down the steel rails toward building 12 and was ultimately placed precisely above the foundations.

Silverado offered the means and methods to enhance the historical preservation of the Pier 70 Building which is an iconic architectural component of the development.
