This project addressed the urgent need to restore and modernize critical infrastructure at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake following the devastating seismic events of July 2019 and subsequent aftershocks. Located in the Magazine Area at NAWS China Lake in Ridgecrest, California, the site sustained extensive damage to 32 ordnance magazines. These damages included headwall separation, significant structural cracks, bowed concrete, and floor heaving, rendering the facilities non-compliant with design criteria and explosive safety standards. As a result, the magazines were unable to withstand blast pressures, compromising operational safety.
Silverado’s scope of work included the demolition of the 32 damaged ordnance magazines, crushing the concrete debris generated during demolition, and rough grading each site for future construction. The demolition phase produced approximately 30,000 tons of concrete. Following this, Silverado established a crushing site to process the concrete into specification-compliant material to support the design-build phase of 25 new missile magazines and other Naval Base infrastructure.
The two-phased approach executed by Silverado was completed ahead of schedule and with a perfect safety record. Silverado’s contribution played a pivotal role in restoring NAWS China Lake's mission-critical operations. As one of Reyes Construction’s key trade partners, Silverado successfully delivered modern, code-compliant facilities designed to meet the Navy’s current and future operational requirements.
