The Crockett Shoreline Cleanup project had been on the horizon for the Marine Team for over 2 years, originally pricing the demolition in 2019. We went through 4 different pricing options throughout the years before work began in early November 2022. The extended timeline between estimating and performing the work is pretty typical for the Marine Division, however this creates logistics challenges of planning work around tides & in water work windows.
The Marine Division was hired by CS Marine and CA State Lands to perform a shoreline cleanup effort in Crockett, CA to make way for a new shoreline park. Our scope of work was to cleanup and dispose of all trash, sunken vessels, & dilapidated structures along the shoreline including the removal of a 35’x100’ pontoon barge and the demolition of the original Nantucket Restaurant Pier.
The biggest challenge of this job was the demolition of the sunken barge that had been pushed up into the shallows. The barge could only be accessed at low tide when most of the barge was out of the water. The problem was that at this time of the year, low tides were in the middle of the night and had a short swing, meaning we only had a few hours per night to complete as much as we could. We were able to complete the demolition in 5 shifts removing 150 tons of steel. In total, the Marine Crews recycled 125 tons of concrete, 150 tons of steel, disposed of 345 tons of trash/ treated wood, and removed 2,785 gallons of waste oil from the shoreline.
